Product Overview

We currently have three (3) standard sizes for the basic Frigid-X® vortex tube – mini size (small size) using 2, 4 or 8 SCFM, the most common size (medium size) using 10, 15, 25, 30 and 40 SCFM, and large sizes use 50, 75, 100 and 150 SCFM. The large size models are used in heavy industry, but are capable of cooling down to over 10,000 BTU/hour. Vortex tubes often come with a custom “hot end”, which regulates the flow and outlet temperature of the cold end. The larger the flow to the hot end, the lower the temperature to the cold end. One important thing to note is that the cooling effect (BTU/hour) is determined by both the flow rate and the drop in temperature. So, if the cooling effect is the most important factor, the cold end outlet flow should be between 60% and 80%. If cold temperature is the most important factor, the cold end outlet air flow should be less than 50%.

All vortex tubes have a “generator,” designed to vary in size for a given flow rate. There are basically two types of generators – one for the cooling effect, and the second for restricting the flow of air out of the cold end to achieve super-low temperatures. Depending on the temperature and pressure of the incoming compressed air, cold end temperatures can be as low as minus 40 and even minus 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

How Vortex Pipe Works

Small vortex tubes (sizes in the 2 – 8 SCFM range) come in two (2) versions – one comes with a custom hot end plug that can be adjusted using a screwdriver ; and the other version with “manual control knob” and a hot-head muffler built into the unit

Vortex Vortex Tube Medium Size

Medium vortex tubes (sizes in the 10 – 40 SCFM range) are also available in two (2) versions – one with a custom hot-plug that can be adjusted using a screwdriver ; and the other version with “manual control knob” and a hot-head muffler built into the unit.

For both small and medium-sized vortex tubes, the user can easily convert the screwdriver lever version to the manual version, depending on the requirements of the particular application.

Large Vortex Vortex Tube

The large vortex tubes (sizes in the 50 – 1150 SCFM range) are available in only one (1) version with a custom hot-plug that can be adjusted with a screwdriver.
